Money and Local Currency

Cambodia’s official currency is the Riel (KHR), but US dollars are widely accepted throughout the country. Prices are often quoted in USD, while Riel is typically used for small purchases and as change.

In major cities like Phnom Penh, Siem Reap, Battambang, and Sihanoukville, ATMs are common and dispense both USD and Riel. However, in rural areas, ATMs can be unreliable or unavailable, so it’s best to carry enough cash when traveling off the beaten path.

A few important tips:

Be cautious of counterfeit or damaged US dollar bills, torn or marked notes may be refused by shops and vendors.

Always carry small denominations ($1s, $5s, and $10s) for convenience.

Inspect your change carefully, especially in busy markets or tourist areas.  By being prepared and aware, you can handle money in Cambodia with confidence and ease.
