The Irrawaddy Dolphin: A Trip to Kratie

There are fewer than 100 Irrawaddy dolphins left in Cambodia. They live in a 190-kilometre stretch of the Mekong River between Kratie and the Laos border, and they are disappearing. The same species has already gone extinct in Laos. In Myanmar and Bangladesh, isolated populations are hanging on. In Cambodia, they are still here, just, and the best place to see them is a quiet village called Kampi, 15 kilometres north of Kratie town.

This is not a typical tourist experience. There are no jumps, no tricks, no guarantee of a sighting. What you get is a flat-bottomed boat, a local operator who has spent years reading the river, an engine switched off in the right spot, and then the wait. When a dolphin surfaces, grey and rounded, rolling briefly before disappearing again, it tends to stay with you. People who make this trip rarely regret it.

Kratie is roughly 5 to 6 hours from Siem Reap by private car. It is an overnight trip and worth treating that way.

The Irrawaddy Dolphin

The Irrawaddy dolphin looks nothing like the dolphins most people have seen. Grey, with a rounded bulging forehead, a short blunt beak, and a small dorsal fin, they are quieter and shyer than their ocean relatives. They do not approach boats. They surface briefly to breathe, roll, and vanish. You will likely hear the exhale before you see the animal.

They are critically endangered throughout their range, threatened by entanglement in fishing nets, blast fishing, habitat loss, and the growing pressure of dams and river traffic on the Mekong. Tourism here, done carefully, is one of the arguments for keeping the river and its communities intact. The local boat operators at Kampi depend on the dolphins being there. That alignment matters.

Kampi Dolphin Site

The site at Kampi is run by local authorities and well organised. Boats depart on demand, carry up to six passengers, and the engine is cut once you reach the viewing area. Tickets cost around $9 to $10 per person, with a small reduction for groups of three or more. A one-hour trip is standard.

Go early. Around 6 to 7am is when sightings are most reliable and the heat is manageable. The dry season, November to April, is the best time to visit. Lower water levels concentrate the dolphins in predictable stretches of the river and make the boat ride itself calmer and easier.

Bring a camera with a zoom lens if you have one. A phone will work but the window is short. More importantly, bring patience. The operator knows the river. Let them work.

What Else to Do in Kratie

Kratie is a genuine Cambodian river town with a well-preserved colonial riverfront, good local food, and almost no hustle. It rewards a slower pace.

  • Koh Trong Island: A short ferry crossing from town brings you to a quiet island in the middle of the Mekong. Rent a bicycle and spend a few hours cycling past pomelo farms, stilt houses, and riverside paths. It is one of the more pleasant half-days in the country.
  • Kampi Rapids: Just beyond the dolphin site, the Mekong opens into a stretch of shallow rapids popular with locals for swimming and relaxing in hammocks. Worth combining with your dolphin visit.
  • Phnom Sambok: A hilltop temple about 12 kilometres from Kratie with views over the Mekong and surrounding countryside. Quiet and largely off the tourist trail.
  • The Riverfront: Kratie’s colonial-era streets along the Mekong are well worth an evening walk. The town has a handful of good guesthouses and restaurants serving fresh Mekong fish.

Getting There from Siem Reap

The most practical option from Siem Reap is a private car, which takes around 5 to 6 hours on a direct route and costs roughly $40 to $65. This gives you flexibility on timing and stops along the way.

Shared minivans are available but most route via Phnom Penh, adding several hours to the journey. A northern route via Stung Treng exists and is faster by minivan at around 6 to 8 hours, but connections are less frequent. For most visitors coming from Siem Reap, a private car arranged through your hotel is the simplest and most reliable option.

Plan for at least one night in Kratie. The town has solid guesthouses along the riverfront and the extra time lets you see both the dolphins and the island without rushing either.
