Siem Reap with Kids

Siem Reap is one of Southeast Asia’s great destinations for families. It is safe, welcoming, endlessly fascinating for curious young minds, and far more child friendly than most people expect before they arrive.

Cambodian culture genuinely loves children. Do not be surprised if a stranger stops to smile at your infant, offer a sweet to your toddler, or strike up a conversation with your ten year old about school. Children are welcomed in restaurants, temples, markets, and public spaces throughout the city without the sideways glances that families sometimes encounter in more formal destinations. Siem Reap feels like a place that was built for people to enjoy life and children fit naturally into that.

Beyond the warmth of the welcome, Siem Reap offers something genuinely rare for children. Real exposure to a living, ancient culture. The temples of Angkor are not just impressive ruins. They are the kind of place that fires a child’s imagination in ways that no classroom ever could. Many parents find that their children talk about Angkor for years after visiting.

Safety for Children in Siem Reap

Siem Reap is a safe city for families. Basic common sense applies as it does anywhere. Keep children close in busy market areas, apply high SPF sunscreen generously and often, and ensure they stay well hydrated particularly during temple visits in the heat of the day. Comfortable walking shoes and a hat are essential for temple exploration.

Temple visits require modest dress for children as well as adults. Light clothing that covers shoulders and knees is required at the main sites. Lightweight scarves and cover-ups are inexpensive and available throughout the city.

Eating and Drinking with Kids

Cambodian food is generally mild and approachable for children. Fried rice, noodle soups, grilled dishes, and fresh fruit are reliable favourites. Western food including pizza, pasta, and burgers is widely available throughout Siem Reap. Restaurants are genuinely welcoming of families and happy to accommodate simple requests.

Drink bottled or filtered water at all times. Established restaurants and bars use purified water for cooking and ice. Fresh fruit from reputable vendors and restaurants is safe and extraordinary. Wash any fruit or vegetables prepared at your accommodation with bottled or filtered water.

Medical and Pharmacy

Medical care in Siem Reap has improved significantly and private clinics with English speaking staff are available for families who need them. Royal Angkor International Hospital is the most well equipped facility in the city. U-Care Pharmacy has several branches throughout Siem Reap and stocks a wide range of medications, paediatric supplies, sunscreen, insect repellent, and personal care products. Travel insurance with medical coverage for the whole family is strongly recommended.

A Note on Vaccinations

Check with your doctor or a travel health clinic before visiting Cambodia with children. Standard recommended vaccinations for the region include Hepatitis A and Typhoid. Ensure routine vaccinations are up to date. Dengue fever is present in Cambodia and transmitted by daytime mosquitoes. Good quality insect repellent appropriate for children’s skin should be applied daily particularly around dawn and dusk.

The family friendly businesses, activities, and accommodation listed on SiemReapLife.com are your best starting point for planning a trip to Siem Reap with children.
