Is it Safe to Walk Alone in Siem Reap?

Is it Safe to Walk Alone in Siem Reap?

Yes. Siem Reap is one of the most walkable and pedestrian-friendly cities in Southeast Asia. The central area around the Old Market, Pub Street, the riverside, and the main tourist streets is busy, well-lit, and active until late most evenings. Solo travellers, including solo women, walk these areas every day without incident. We live here. This is not a reassurance written from the outside.

That said, walking alone anywhere in the world involves a basic level of awareness, and Siem Reap is no exception.

During the Day

Walking alone during the day in Siem Reap is entirely straightforward. The city is compact, the central area is easy to navigate on foot, and the streets are generally busy with locals, tuk-tuks, and other visitors. The temple complex at Angkor requires a tuk-tuk or bicycle to reach given the distances involved, but within th e park itself walking between temples is common and safe.

Keep your bag on the inside when walking near traffic. Phone snatching from motorbikes is the most common form of petty theft and it happens most often when phones or bags are visible and accessible from the road. This applies during the day as much as at night.

At Night

The main tourist areas of Siem Reap are active and well-populated at night. Pub Street and the surrounding lanes, the Old Market area, the riverside night markets, and the main restaurant streets are busy until midnight or later during peak season and remain safe for solo walkers. The presence of other tourists, tuk-tuk drivers, market sellers, and restaurant staff means these areas are rarely empty.

Avoid walking alone in unlit streets away from the main tourist areas late at night. Not because violent crime is common but because basic street sense applies everywhere. If you are heading somewhere unfamiliar after dark, take a tuk-tuk. PassApp gives you a fixed price and a tracked ride for around $1 to $2 anywhere in the city.

Do not leave your drink unattended at bars. Drink spiking is not common in Siem Reap but it has occurred.

For Solo Women

Solo women travel Siem Reap regularly and the overwhelming consensus is that it is a comfortable and manageable destination. Street harassment is rare compared to most cities in the region. Cambodian culture is generally respectful toward women and the overt attention that solo women encounter in parts of India, Morocco, or even Thailand is largely absent here. You will be approached by tuk-tuk drivers and market sellers but that is commercial rather than threatening and applies equally to everyone.

The main tourist areas feel genuinely safe for women walking alone, including at night. Pub Street and the riverside are busy enough that you are rarely isolated. The areas that require more thought are the same ones that require thought for anyone: unlit streets away from the tourist centre after midnight, getting into a vehicle with someone you have not arranged through your hotel or an app, and not leaving your drink unattended.

Trust your instincts. They are usually right. If a situation feels off, leave it. That advice applies everywhere and Siem Reap gives you fewer reasons to use it than most places.

Practical Notes

Keep your hotel address saved on your phone. Most tuk-tuk drivers know the main hotels by name but having the address helps with smaller guesthouses. Use PassApp for fixed-price tracked rides rather than flagging drivers on the street at night.

Siem Reap is not without risk. Nowhere is. But the risks here are manageable, the city is genuinely welcoming, and the vast majority of people who walk it alone, day and night, do so without incident.
