Water and What You Need to Know

If you have read something alarming about water quality in Siem Reap online, take a breath. Millions of people live and visit here every year and manage their daily water needs without drama. Here is the honest, practical picture from people who actually live here.

The Basic Rule

Do not drink straight from the tap. That is it. That is the rule. Everything else is manageable and most of it is simpler than you think.

Brushing Your Teeth

The question everyone asks and nobody wants to admit they are worried about. Use bottled water if you want to be completely safe. In practice the vast majority of long term expats and residents brush their teeth with tap water without issue. A small amount of water that does not get swallowed is not going to ruin your trip. Do whatever makes you comfortable but do not lose sleep over it.

Showering and Bathing

Completely fine. Nobody is filtering their shower water. You will shower, bathe, wash your hair, and go about your life exactly as you would at home. The water is fine for skin contact. Children can bathe normally. If you wear contact lenses avoid getting tap water directly in your eyes, which is good practice anywhere in the world.

Washing Dishes

Locals and expats wash dishes with tap water every day. If you are particularly cautious give your dishes a final rinse with filtered water. Most people do not bother and are absolutely fine.

Boiling Water

Boiling tap water makes it safe for drinking and cooking. Many households and guesthouses have electric kettles and use boiled water for hot drinks. Large refillable water jugs are widely available and delivered to homes and apartments throughout the city. They are inexpensive and what most long term residents use for drinking and cooking water day to day.

Washing Vegetables and Fruit

Use bottled or filtered water for anything you are going to eat raw. This is standard practice across Southeast Asia and takes about thirty seconds longer than washing under the tap. Vegetable wash solutions are available in supermarkets if you want an extra layer of reassurance.

Washing Clothes

Tap water. No issue. Your laundry will come out exactly as it should.

Dentures, Retainers, and Medical Equipment

Use bottled or filtered water for cleaning anything that goes directly in your mouth. Simple and easy.

Ice in Drinks

Ice served in established restaurants and bars in Siem Reap is made from filtered or purified water. The cylindrical ice with the hole through the middle that you will see everywhere is commercially produced purified ice and is safe. If you are buying drinks from a very basic roadside stall and are unsure, ask for no ice. In any proper restaurant or bar you are fine.

The April Question

Around early April as the dry season reaches its peak and water levels in the Siem Reap River drop naturally, the appearance of tap water can change slightly in colour. It looks worse than it is. It is a natural seasonal occurrence that long term residents are completely used to. It has no impact on bottled water, filtered water systems, or the water supply in any hotel or modern residence. If you are visiting around this time and notice it, now you know why. It is not cause for alarm.

The Bottom Line

Water in Siem Reap requires a small amount of common sense and nothing more. Drink bottled or filtered water. Shower, bathe, brush your teeth, wash your clothes, and live your life normally. Millions of people do exactly this every single day here. The adjustment takes about twenty four hours and after that you will not think about it again.
