Boat tours on the Tonle Sap offer something genuinely different from anything else you will do in Siem Reap. The lake is vast, the light is extraordinary in the early morning and at sunset, and the communities you pass through have been living on the water for generations. Whether you book a half-day village tour, a sunset cruise, or a full expedition to the Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary, a boat trip on the Tonle Sap is one of the most memorable experiences Cambodia has to offer.

Set Sail
Tours on the Tonle Sap range from simple half-day village trips to full-day and overnight expeditions. Most use flat-bottomed wooden boats that can navigate shallow channels and reach areas larger vessels cannot. For the flooded forest at Kampong Phluk, you transfer into a smaller canoe paddled by local women from the community.
Tara Boat is one of the most established operators on the lake, running for over 20 years with guides born in the villages you visit. Their morning village tour starts from $36 per person all-inclusive, covering hotel pickup, the boat, entrance fees, and food and drinks. Their sunset cruise runs aboard the Queen Tara, a 100-year-old converted vessel and the largest boat on the lake, with a full buffet and open bar. Book directly through a reputable operator. Many generic tours on the lake route guests through commission-paying stops that benefit the operator, not the community. Look for operators whose guides are local and whose pricing is transparent upfront.

Wildlife on the Lake
The Tonle Sap is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the most biodiverse freshwater ecosystems in the world, home to over 200 species of fish, rare waterbirds, and reptiles. The Prek Toal Bird Sanctuary at the western end of the lake is one of the most important waterbird breeding grounds in Southeast Asia, home to over 150 species including Spot-billed Pelicans, Painted Storks, Greater and Lesser Adjutants, and Oriental Darters. Large flocks are almost guaranteed between January and May. Keep an eye on the water as you travel. Fishing eagles and kingfishers are common sightings along the river channels and lake edges throughout the year.
Tours and Excursions
Tours depart from the Chong Khneas pier, about 15 km south of central Siem Reap. Most reputable operators include hotel pickup. Bring sunscreen, a hat, water, and a camera. A full list of tour providers can be found on our Tours and Adventures page.
